About the Hebgen Basin Rural Resort Tax District
The Hebgen Basin Rural Resort Tax District was created to support the unique needs of our small but vibrant community, which welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Recognized by the Montana Department of Commerce as a designated resort area, the district encompasses the Hebgen Basin Rural Fire District and reflects the reality that tourism is the primary driver of our local economy. With fewer than 2,500 residents, our community relies heavily on businesses that serve the recreational and personal needs of visitors who travel here to experience the natural beauty and outdoor opportunities of the region.
The purpose of the resort tax is to ensure that those who enjoy our community also help sustain it. The tax is collected on goods and services typically purchased by tourists, as well as on certain luxuries, while excluding necessities of life. These funds are then reinvested locally, with priority given to essential services such as fire protection, emergency medical response, and healthcare within the district. In addition, resort tax revenue supports the administration and oversight of the program itself, ensuring accountability and transparency.
By establishing the Hebgen Basin Rural Resort Tax District, residents and leaders have taken an important step toward protecting public safety and maintaining the quality of life for both locals and visitors. This collective effort helps balance the economic impact of tourism while providing sustainable funding for critical services that benefit everyone in our community.
